Week 3 Reflection
This week I had my meeting with Mike to go over my inquiry project and track where I was at in the course. The meeting went well and he helped me work through a couple issues I was having with WordPress. During the class zoom we had a guest speaker who spoke on AI and technology integrations in a local school district. What she had to share was super interesting and helpful if I end up working or doing my practicum in that district. Hearing about how technology is being integrated into the classroom is so interesting as I think it is important that students are exposed to technology as that is the world we live it but at the same time being careful with how the teacher is integrating it. We live in the world of technology which is awesome as it opens so many more doors but it is also scary at the same time especially thinking about such young minds being exposed to it. The guest speaker used some good examples of how AI and technology is being used in the school district she works in. One example was in a foods class where the students baked three batches of chocolate chip cookies all using different recipes. One was a family recipe, the second was a cookie recipe off google and the third was a recipe suggested by AI. The AI cookies came out the best which was disappointing to hear but then the class looked at the recipe of the AI cookies compared to the other two recipes. The identified that AI’s recipe had by far the most “unhealthy” ingredients like butter and sugar as well as it used more ingredients than the others meaning they would be more expensive to make. I really enjoyed hearing this and hearing that the teacher integrated AI into the classroom while keeping it human as well with the conversations that followed the experiment. She spoke on keeping conversations around AI human centred which was a mindset that I agreed with and appreciated. When going through some of the links provided on bright space I came across an Artificial Intelligence Literacy Lessons Teacher Guide link. When I was looking at the table of contents there was a link under the Primary Artificial Intelligence Lessons titled “real or fake” I was intrigued so I clicked on it and loved the video I saw. I think this is a great age appropriate way to show children that things can look real but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are real. Overall I learned a lot this week and appreciated all that the guest speaker had to share.
